Writing is easy to under-prepare
SEAL conversations at the kitchen table often sound like “we are doing the maths papers.” Writing looks smaller on the timetable and then decides close results. Markers can only reward what is on the page: a clear plan, controlled sentences, and ideas that answer the prompt.
What the task is really asking
Whether the piece is persuasive or narrative, the student has to interpret the prompt, choose a structure, and finish. Unfinished writing scores poorly even when the opening is strong. Timed practice is the only way to learn how much they can actually complete.
A small writing program beats a big one
One planned piece a week, marked for structure and sentence control, outperforms five unmarked stories. A tutor or parent can ask: Did you answer the prompt? Is there a beginning, middle and end? Where is the evidence or the turning point?
Success isn't about studying harder; it's about studying smarter.
Writing habits that show up on test day
- Spend two minutes planning before the first sentence
- Leave a margin to add a word later if needed
- Practise finishing, even if the last paragraph is short
- Check one thing at the end: full stops and the prompt
- Reuse a simple structure so the clock is spent on ideas

The writing task is only hidden if families ignore it. Treat it as a scored section from the first month of prep and it stops being the surprise that undoes an otherwise strong paper.
