What is NCEA Level 1?

NCEA Level 1 is the first stage of the National Certificate of Educational Achievement, New Zealand's principal secondary school qualification, administered by the New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA). Most students sit it in Year 11. To be awarded the certificate, a student needs 60 credits at Level 1 or above, plus the 20-credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite - 10 credits of literacy and 10 of numeracy, assessed through separate common assessment activities that sit outside their subject standards.

Credits are earned against Achievement Standards, each graded Not Achieved, Achieved, Merit, or Excellence. Some standards are assessed internally by the school across the year; others are assessed externally in the November examinations. A certificate can be endorsed with Merit or Excellence when enough credits are earned at that grade, and individual subjects can be endorsed too - which is why grade quality, not just credit count, matters from the very first year.

At Jaya's Academy, our NCEA Level 1 Online Tutoring program is built around the exact standards your child is entered for. Year 11 is the year students learn how NCEA works; getting that right sets the pattern for Levels 2 and 3.

Our experienced NCEA tutors understand that Year 11 is as much about learning the system as learning the subject. Whether your child needs support in English, Mathematics and Statistics, the Sciences, Humanities, Business Studies, or a language, every lesson is tailored to the standards they are actually being assessed against - and to the grade they are aiming for.

Why Choose Jaya's Academy for NCEA Level 1 Online Tutoring?

Year 11 is the first time your child's work counts toward a national qualification, and the first time they have to manage internal deadlines, external exams, and co-requisite assessments at the same time. Our online NCEA tutors create customized learning plans that build subject knowledge and assessment technique together - so students are not just covering content, but demonstrating it in the way each standard requires.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many credits does my child need to pass NCEA Level 1?+
A student needs 60 credits at Level 1 or above, plus the 20-credit literacy and numeracy co-requisite - 10 credits of literacy and 10 of numeracy. The co-requisite is assessed separately from subject standards and must be met for any NCEA certificate to be awarded.
What is the difference between internal and external assessment?+
Internal standards are assessed by your child's school across the year - research tasks, investigations, portfolios, and presentations. External standards are assessed by NZQA in the November examinations. Our tutoring covers both, with the focus shifting to externals from Term 3.
What are the literacy and numeracy co-requisites?+
They are 20 compulsory credits - 10 literacy and 10 numeracy - assessed through common assessment activities that sit outside subject standards. Students typically attempt them from Year 10 or Year 11 and can resit if needed. We prepare students specifically for these assessments.
Which subjects do you cover at NCEA Level 1?+
English, Mathematics and Statistics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space Science, History, Geography, Economics, Business Studies, and languages including French, Japanese, Spanish, German, and Chinese (Mandarin).
Can tutoring help my child achieve an endorsement?+
Yes. Certificate endorsement recognizes a strong body of Merit or Excellence grades, and individual subjects can be endorsed too. Our tutors target the specific gap between an Achieved response and a Merit or Excellence one in each standard.
When should my child start NCEA Level 1 tutoring?+
Term 1 is ideal, because internal assessments begin early and credits accumulate across the whole year. That said, tutoring started mid-year is still effective - particularly for external exam preparation from Term 3 onward.
