What is the Leaving Certificate?
Senior Cycle is the final stage of second-level education in Ireland. Many schools offer an optional Transition Year (TY) after Junior Cycle, focused on personal development, work experience and mini-courses, before students move into 5th Year and 6th Year - the two years that lead to the Leaving Certificate. The Leaving Cert is Ireland's state second-level qualification, with syllabuses set by the NCCA and examinations set and marked by the State Examinations Commission (SEC), sat in June of 6th Year. Most subjects are examined at Higher, Ordinary or Foundation level, and results are converted into CAO points (out of 625 on the current scale, including bonus points for Higher Level Maths) used by the Central Applications Office for third-level college and university admissions.
Some students instead follow the Leaving Certificate Applied (LCA) or the Leaving Certificate Vocational Program (LCVP) - our tutors primarily support the established Leaving Certificate, the pathway most students and CAO applicants follow.
