Recounting the text is not analysis
Many capable readers still write essays that retell the plot. Analytical writing makes a claim about how a text works - language, structure, perspective - and then proves it with short, well-chosen evidence. That is what Australian English assessments reward from middle years onward.
Teach the sentence before the essay
A strong analytical sentence names a technique, quotes briefly, and explains the effect on the reader. Once a student can write that sentence on demand, introductions and body paragraphs become much easier to assemble.
Feedback has to be specific
“Add more detail” does not help. “Your quote shows the event, but not the author’s attitude - add one word that reveals tone” does. Online English tutoring is useful when it marks at that level and then asks for a rewrite, not a new essay every week.
