Knowing the notes is not the same as doing the experiment

Plenty of students can recite a method and still cannot explain why they heated the mixture, what the colour change meant, or where the error came from. The theory-practical gap shows up in both school pracs and exam questions that describe an experiment.

Why the gap appears

Theory is often taught as definitions. Practicals are often taught as a list of steps to finish before the bell. Unless someone asks “what would happen if we changed this?”, the two stay separate. Online tutoring can walk through a prac on screen and force that link.

How to close it this term

After every experiment, the student should be able to name the independent variable, the observation, and one likely source of error. After every theory topic, they should describe one measurement or reaction that would show the idea in real life.

Success isn't about studying harder; it's about studying smarter.

Questions that connect both sides

  1. What are we measuring, and in what unit?
  2. What would a wrong result look like?
  3. Which variable did we change on purpose?
  4. How does this observation match the equation?
  5. What would we improve if we ran it again?

Final Thoughts

Chemistry clicks when theory and practical describe the same event in two languages. Students who can translate between them lose fewer marks on both pracs and written papers.
