What IGCSE Physics Actually Is

IGCSE Physics is the Cambridge or Edexcel course taken by many students in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman international schools. It is designed to build a working understanding of mechanics, electricity, waves, thermal physics, and atomic ideas, then test that understanding in written papers. Families sometimes treat it as a harder version of school science. In practice it is a separate qualification with its own syllabus, command words, and practical assessment, and students do better when revision is aimed at that specification rather than at generic physics notes.

Cambridge and Edexcel Are Not Identical

Both boards cover similar physics, but the topic lists, paper structures, and wording of questions differ. Cambridge IGCSE Physics typically includes multiple-choice, structured theory, and either a practical or Alternative to Practical paper. Edexcel IGCSE Physics has its own paper split and mark-scheme style. A tutor who teaches the wrong board can still help with concepts, but will miss the exact practicals, formulae, and question styles the student will sit. Matching the board is the first useful step.

Core Versus Extended

Cambridge offers Core and Extended. Core covers the fundamental ideas and caps the available grade. Extended includes the Core content plus extra depth, more demanding calculations, and access to the higher grades. Many Gulf schools enter able students for Extended as a default. That only works if the extra content is actually taught and practised. Students who are entered for Extended but still think in Core-level explanations often lose marks on multi-step calculations and evaluation questions.

The Topics That Carry the Course

Most syllabuses spend serious time on motion, forces, energy, and moments; electrical circuits, current, voltage, and magnetism; waves, sound, and light; thermal physics; and atomic or nuclear physics. Numerical practice sits through all of these. The papers also expect students to rearrange formulae, use standard form, convert units, and read graphs. Weak algebra shows up as weak physics even when the idea is understood, which is why good IGCSE Physics teaching always includes the maths of the topic, not only the story.

How the Course Is Assessed

Written papers mix short recall, structured calculation, and longer explain or evaluate items. Practical skill is tested either through a supervised experiment or through the Alternative to Practical paper, which asks about apparatus, methods, variables, errors, and how to improve an experiment. Students who skip practical language because they think it is not a lab exam still meet those questions on paper. Command words matter: state needs a short fact, explain needs a reason, calculate needs working and units.

A Sensible Way to Prepare

Start with the official syllabus checklist for the board and level the school is using. Close gaps topic by topic, then move to past papers under timed conditions. After each paper, mark against the scheme and rewrite any answer that lost method or unit marks. Keep a short formula sheet the student can derive, not only copy. In the Gulf, sessions after school hours work best when they target this week's class topic plus one older weak topic, so the course does not pile up unread until mocks.

IGCSE Physics rewards students who can use a concept, show the working, and write to the mark scheme of their actual exam board.
