This doesn't mean ICSE students can't succeed at JEE or NEET, many do, but it typically means more supplementary NCERT-aligned preparation is needed alongside the regular ICSE syllabus, something a tutor experienced with both boards can plan for well in advance.
Board Exam Structure at Class 10 and 12
CBSE's Class 10 and 12 board exams are widely recognised, with a consistent, national-level format each year. ICSE's equivalent exams, and the ISC exams at Class 12, are also nationally recognised and well respected, particularly by many private universities and international admissions offices, but the exam pattern and subject choices differ enough that switching boards mid-way through secondary school, while possible, works best with careful planning and dedicated support around the transition.
Making the Decision as a Family
Rather than choosing a board based on reputation alone, it helps to look honestly at how a child engages with schoolwork: whether they gravitate toward structured, formula-driven problem solving or toward descriptive, discussion-based answers, and what their likely academic direction looks like, engineering and medicine versus a broader humanities or international pathway. Both boards can lead to strong outcomes; what matters is that the choice is a genuine fit rather than a default.
The right board is the one that fits how your child actually thinks and answers a question, not the one with the loudest reputation.
