What Is Elementary Social Studies?
In the elementary grades Social Studies is where children first learn how their country works - its communities, its geography, its history and their own place in it. Ontario teaches it as Social Studies in Grades 1 to 6 under the strands Heritage and Identity and People and Environments. British Columbia runs Social Studies from Kindergarten with an inquiry focus. Alberta teaches Social Studies across Divisions 1 and 2. All three now give real weight to Indigenous perspectives. Because so much of the subject is reading and writing, students who struggle with literacy often struggle here first.

Which grades does this cover?+
Grades 1 to 6. From Grade 7 onward, our High School History and Geography program takes over in Ontario, and Social Studies 10-30 covers Alberta senior courses.
Does this follow my province's curriculum?+
