Why it works
What Is the OSSLT?
The Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test is a provincial assessment administered by EQAO and normally written in Grade 10. Passing it - or completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course in its place - is a graduation requirement for the OSSD, which makes it one of the few tests in Canada a student genuinely cannot avoid. It measures the reading and writing skills built up across every subject to the end of Grade 9, not English class alone. Who has to write the OSSLT?+
Ontario secondary students, normally in Grade 10. Passing the OSSLT - or completing the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course instead - is required to earn the Ontario Secondary School Diploma.
My teen did not pass on the first attempt. Can you help?+
Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. We start by identifying which component fell short - the reading responses, the news report or the series of paragraphs - and target that directly rather than re-teaching everything.
What is actually on the test?+
Reading selections with multiple-choice and short written responses, plus two longer writing tasks: a news report written from a photo and caption, and a series of paragraphs expressing an opinion. We practise all of them in their real formats.
How far ahead should we start?+
Six to eight weeks is comfortable for most students. Teens re-writing after an unsuccessful attempt, or working with an IEP or ELL accommodation, usually benefit from starting earlier.
