What Is Alberta Social Studies 10-30?
Alberta does not split senior Social Studies into history and geography. It runs a single numbered sequence built around issue questions: Social Studies 10 examines globalization, 20 examines nationalism, and 30 examines ideology and citizenship. Each level splits into a -1 stream, which is more analytically demanding and required for many university programs, and a -2 stream leading to other pathways. Both 30-1 and 30-2 end in a diploma examination whose result counts toward the final course mark - which is why source interpretation and the position paper matter so much here.

What is the difference between the -1 and -2 streams?+
The -1 stream is the more analytically demanding route and is required for many university programs; -2 leads to other post-secondary and career pathways. We support both, and help students deciding whether to move between them.
Do you prepare students for the 30-1 and 30-2 diploma exams?+
Yes. Diploma results count toward the final course mark, so we work on the written-response and multiple-choice technique the exam actually rewards, not just the content.
What exactly is a position paper?+
It is Alberta's signature Social Studies task: students are given a source, must identify the perspective in it, take a position on the related issue, and defend it with evidence. It is heavily weighted, and it is a skill we teach explicitly.
Is this only for Alberta students?+
The course sequence is Alberta's, so yes in practice. Students in Ontario and BC are served by our History and Geography page instead.
